Robert Whitehead 1924–2013

It is with sadness that we report the death of Bob Whitehead of Tonbridge, Kent. He died peacefully on August 31st with Jean, his wife of 64 years, at his side.

Bob will be known to many as an outstanding author of traction engine books with a definitive work on steam rollers and a series of scholarly publications on the history of Garretts. His knowledge and expertise on all matters to do with traction engines was immense. His friendly nature and generosity has meant that over the years there are many people who are grateful for his help and encouragement.

He was also a pioneer preservationist, purchasing his first engine, Fowler 9924, in 1955. He owned this engine for over 50 years, before passing ownership to the next generation of his family. Over the years he acquired a number of other engines to prevent them from being scrapped. In addition he was involved in organising some of the early Kent rallies.

Our condolences go to his wife, Jean, his family and many friends.
